Mike McEvoy, PhD, NRP, RN, CCRN, is the EMS coordinator for Saratoga County, N.Y., and a nurse clinician in the cardiothoracic surgical intensive care units at Albany Medical Center where he also teaches critical care medicine and chairs the hospital resuscitation committee. He is a paramedic supervisor and the CME coordinator for Clifton Park-Halfmoon EMS, a firefighter and chief medical officer for West Crescent Fire Department, a member of the JEMS editorial board, and the EMS editor for Fire Engineering magazine. Mike is the chair of the International Association of Fire Chiefs EMS Section board of directors and lead author of the textbook Critical Care Transport and the Informed pocket guide series (Jones & Bartlett). In his free time, he is an avid hiker and winter mountaineer.

CPAP and Capnography: A Dynamic Duo

Continuous Positive Airway Pressure or CPAP is a BLS and ALS tools that can save lives, reduce hospitalization times, and provide better patient management in the field. This presentation provides a history of CPAP, overview of patient selection criteria, standards of care, assessment, application of CPAP in the field and transition of care to the Emergency Department. Disposable CPAP devices and use of capnography with the application and titration of CPAP promise to increase utilization and improve patient outcomes.
