Rod VanOrsdol, BS, AS, NRP, is an Assistant Professor of Paramedicine at Central Oregon Community College in Bend, Oregon. He has been involved in EMS since 1987, when he became an EMT for a volunteer fire department in Pennsylvania. After moving to Florida, he became a paramedic for a 3rd service EMS, then a firefighter/paramedic for a large west coast fire department. He rose through the ranks to Assistant Chief – EMS and retired in 2019. In addition, he flew as a flight paramedic for 18 years, was a SWAT medic, and EMT/paramedic instructor. He has also consulted as a subject matter expert on multiple EMS textbooks.

Scene Safety and Situational Awareness

Verifying that a scene is safe is drilled into every EMT and paramedic from day one, but the reality is that no scene is ever 100% danger-free. There is danger in assuming that a scene is and will remain safe. In this course, we will explore ways to make the scene as safe as possible.
